Michigan Medicine's hospitals were ranked best in Michigan and fifth nationwide in U.S. News & World Report's 2018-19 Best Hospitals rankings released Tuesday. Michigan Medicine is the academic medical center of the University of Michigan.

Beaumont Hospital-Royal Oak ranked second-best among more than 165 Michigan hospitals evaluated, followed by Beaumont Hospital-Troy, which was rated the third-best in the state.

The University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital was ranked Michigan's top children's hospital, followed by Spectrum Health Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids. The Detroit Medical Center's Children's Hospital of Michigan was ranked third best in the state.  

U.S. News ranks hospital performance in 16 areas of complex specialty care and also rates hospitals in nine "bellwether" procedures and conditions such as heart bypass, hip and knee replacement, heart failure and lung cancer surgery meant to reflect overall quality. 

Michigan Medicine had 10 surgical and medical specialties that ranked in the top 10 for the country.  

“This No. 5 ranking is a reflection of our relentless commitment to putting patients first,” Michigan Medicine CEO Marschall Runge said in a statement.

 “These rankings are heavily influenced by quality and safety measures. I am proud of the people in this organization who go above and beyond every day to ensure our high standards of quality and safety." 

Beaumont Hospital-Royal Oak was ranked among the top 50 hospitals nationally for nine specialties, including ranks of 14th for diabetes & endocrinology, 18th for gastroenterology & gastro-intestinal surgery, and 19th for pulmonology. 

Beaumont Hospital-Troy was ranked   32nd nationally for ear, nose & throat, and 35th in pulmonology. 

“Our team’s accomplishments and ongoing efforts impress me every day,” John Fox, president and CEO of Beaumont Health, said in a press release Tuesday. “We achieved these rankings through great teamwork and by partnering and collaborating with the patients and families we serve.”
