Alleged street racing crash in Ypsilanti Twp. leaves 1 dead
A driver died Wednesday after being struck by two people accused of illegal street racing in Ypsilanti Township, Washtenaw County Sheriff's officials said.
The 62-year-old man was pulling onto Ecorse near South Harris about 10 a.m. at the same time witnesses reported an Audi and Chrysler 300 speeding to pass each other on the road, sheriff's spokesman Derrick Jackson said.
After colliding with a Whitmore Lake man's Ford Fusion, both motorists kept going but crashed, Jackson said. One hit three parked cars at a gas station on the north side of the road, he added.
Both drivers fled on foot. Investigators apprehended one, identified as a 31-year-old Ypsilanti resident, a short time later.
Huron Valley Ambulance transported him to a hospital, where his condition was not available Wednesday night.
The other driver remained on the run. The 62-year-old victim died at the scene.
