Battle Creek – A Michigan mother plans to honor her murdered son on his birthday by giving backpacks with school supplies to children who’ve lost a parent to homicide.

Rosetta Brewer will distribute 50 backpacks Monday during a birthday party to celebrate what would have been her son’s 38th birthday, The Battle Creek Enquirer reported .

Her son, Frank Williams II, was fatally shot in January 2006. No one has been arrested in the case. Brewer said she was inspired to do the giveaway because her son always loved children.

“This is not going to bring (him) back to me, but I am trying to make a change. Here is something to help somebody a little bit. I hate to see anyone go through what I went through,” she said.

The backpacks include supplies like pencils, crayons, glue, index cards and erasers. Brewer also plans to provide hot dogs, chips and birthday cake at the party, as well as games.

She said fellow mothers of victims and other community members helped her raise the money for the supplies and the party.

Brewer hopes to use the event to begin organizing an effort to raise money to help the families of those who are victims of homicide.

“Some don’t have money or life insurance to even bury their child,” she said.

Brewer said she’s tried to do other things in honor of her son, like giving away candy at Halloween and organizing a Christmas party for children. She said she hopes her actions will help others.
