Police have identified the man who died early Thursday after crashing the plane he was flying in St. Clair County's Kimball Township.

The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office said the pilot has been identified as Stephan Maisonneuve, 51, of Ottawa, Ontario.

Just after midnight, the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office was advised that a plane was overdue in its arrival to International Airport.

Deputies searched the property and areas near it, eventually finding the plane, having crashed, next to the softball fields on Yager Road, a quarter-mile west of the runway it was supposed to land on.

Authorities said the 51-year-old pilot was the only person in the plane. The plane itself is a 1981 Cessna model 340, twin engine. It suffered "extensive damage" in the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the crash.
