1 dead, 1 hurt in I-69 crashes in Riley Twp.
Riley Twp. — One person is dead and another injured after a couple of crashes Tuesday morning on westbound Interstate 69 in St. Clair County, according to the sheriff's office.
Officials said a preliminary investigation indicates the first crash happened before 8:30 a.m. on the freeway east of Stapleton Road.
Deputies are still on the scene of the crash and one lane of westbound I-69 near Stapleton Road in Riley Township is closed to traffic. Riley Township is about 50 miles northeast of Detroit.
It appears, according to authorities, a truck hauling a horse trailer lost control on the slippery pavement and slid into a ditch on the north side of the road, causing the truck and trailer to roll over.
The truck's two occupants got out of the vehicle and waited for a tow truck, police said.
A second vehicle traveling near them lost control on the roadway and slid into the same ditch, striking the two people, they said.
Authorities said one of the people was killed after being pinned between the second vehicle and the trailer. The other person sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to the sheriff's office.
