Light snow showers expected this weekend
It will still feel like winter going into this weekend in Metro Detroit with more cold temperatures and snow showers, weather experts said Friday.
The region will continue to hover in the mid to high 30s temperature-wise on Friday and into Saturday, with the evening weather in the 20s, said Steven Freitag, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in White Lake Township.
And the light snow showers will continue Friday and Saturday but only leaving a dusting to an inch of the white stuff, he said.
"I guess you can say winter arrived a month early," Freitag said. "You can say winter-like temperatures, that's a fair assessment."
Although winter isn't officially declared until late December, the weather patterns here have been mostly in the 30s and low 40s. For monthly temperatures, Metro Detroit is a "good 5 degrees below normal," Freitag said.
"It's pretty significant for the monthly average anytime you get to two degrees or more below," he said.
On Friday, the snow showers will give way to wind gusts up to 25 mph and continue with breezy weather into the evening. Snow showers continue Saturday.
The dryness returns for Sunday, though, with partly sunny skies with temperatures in the mid 30s.
Freitag said he's not ready to say that a slight warm snap is gone for good.
"Things can turn. You can't really project that into the winter," he said. "In December and January, 50 degrees is still a possibility for a day or two. Just because you are in winter doesn't mean you can't have a couple mild spells."
