County to fix fields to keep softball tourney in town
Grand Blanc – A Michigan county will spend $50,000 to keep softballs flying off the bats of some of the state’s best high school players.
Genesee County will help improve the fields at Creasey Bicentennial Park in Grand Blanc to keep the Firestix tournament in town. The county will set aside money from a 5 percent lodging tax. The Flint Journal says the July tournament creates a demand for hundreds of hotel room nights.
County Commissioner Mark Young says there was a risk of losing the softball tournament without improvements at Creasey Park. The Firestix tournament is an opportunity for colleges to see top softball players.
Tournament president Kevin Babcock says coaches and parents have asked for field upgrades. The Grand Blanc Parks and Recreation Commission is also kicking in money.
