A Michigan State Police trooper has been suspended after a preliminary investigation determined he was the cause of a crash late Friday that left one dead.

Authorities say 26-year-old David G. Engel of DeWitt was killed in the multi-vehicle crash that occurred in DeWitt.

The crash occurred as the trooper was driving with his overhead lights and siren operating. He was headed for a retail theft call.

The police cruiser struck the rear of a truck, forcing it into Engel’s vehicle. The trooper had minor injuries. The truck driver was not injured. Police have not released their names.

In explaining the trooper’s suspension, state police 1st Lt. Darren Green said Monday that even when responding to emergencies, police officers are obligated to drive in a way that doesn’t endanger themselves or the public.
