Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has ordered flags to fly at half-staff on Friday in honor of a volunteer East Tawas firefighter who died of cardiac arrest Saturday at age 78.

Norman Klenow was a U.S. Navy veteran who served three years and was a volunteer firefighter for 50 years at the East Tawas Fire Department in Iosco County.

On Saturday, Klenow assisted with traffic control at a crash site and fell ill. Hours later he died of cardiac arrest.

“In the course of his service, Norman Klenow was incredibly brave and selfless,” Whitmer said in a statement.

Klenow's funeral, according to Buresh Funeral Homes, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church.

Flags will return to full-staff Saturday.
