Lapeer County Sheriff deputies are investigating a Sunday crash that killed two people who were riding on a motorcycle in Mayfield Township.

Mayfield Township — Lapeer County sheriff's deputies are investigating a Sunday crash between a sport utility vehicle and a motorcycle that killed two people, officials said.

Deputies were called at about 3:41 p.m. to an area of North Lapeer and Mayfield roads about a crash involving a motorcycle, according to authorities.

Witnesses told deputies a 2005 GMC Envoy heading north on North Lapeer was driving erratically. The Envoy crossed the center line of the road, they said, moved into the southbound lane and into the path of a 2012 Harley-Davidson.

The SUV and the motorcycle crashed head-on, police said. The motorcycle's rider and his passenger, each wearing a helmet, were ejected.

Paramedics declared the rider, identified as Brian Stamp, 53, of Marlette, and his passenger, Rhonda McHaffy, 51, also of Marlette, dead at the scene. Police said the two were boyfriend and girlfriend.

Officials transported the Envoy's driver, a 45-year-old North Branch man, to a hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police closed the roadway for about 2.5 hours to enable paramedics to perform rescue efforts and for deputies to conduct an investigation.

They said the results of a toxicology test on the driver are pending.

Anyone with information about the crash should call Det. Jason Parks at (810) 656-1015 or jparks@lapeercounty.org.
