Pickup driver dies after crashing into Imlay City school bus
A 64-year-old man died Wednesday after crashing into the rear of a stopped Imlay City school bus transporting elementary students home, authorities said.
The crash occurred at 4:20 p.m. Wednesday on Bowers Road, west of Lake Pleasant in Attica, a Lapeer County township.
Lapeer County deputies determined the Imlay City Community Schools bus was traveling east on Bowers and stopped in the roadway as the driver dropped off elementary students.
The flashing red lights were on and there was a stop sign on the left side of the bus, deputies said.
A student exited the bus and was released to a parent just before a 2001 Ford F-150, driven by Richard Gonda of Attica, crashed into the back of the stopped bus.
Officials said there were no signs of braking prior to the collision. Attica Township Fire and Rescue pulled Gonda, the lone occupant, from the vehicle and he was taken to McLaren Hospital in Lapeer. Within an hour, Gonda died.
The 43-year-old bus driver and four students on the bus were not injured.
Deputies' preliminary investigation did not indicate that alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. They also said the posted speed limit was 45 mph and speeding did not contribute to the crash.
The crash is under investigation by Lapeer County Sheriff's Office. Anyone with information can contact Deputy Nick Vandenberg at 810-245-2449.
