Michigan officers shoot man who came at them with knife

Paw Paw – Police in southwestern Michigan shot and wounded a man who came at them with a knife, authorities said.

Officers were called around 9:30 p.m. Thursday on a report of a man cutting himself in the driveway of a house in Paw Paw Township, the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office said.

Before officers arrived at the scene, the suspect ran away, WOOD-TV reported. He was later found by a sheriff’s deputy and a Paw Paw police officer. The two officers shot the suspect when he went towards them armed with a knife, the sheriff’s office said.

The suspect, a 49-year-old Wisconsin man, was taken to a hospital in critical condition, the sheriff’s office said. His name was not immediately released.

It was later discovered the man had broken into the house, the sheriff’s office said. The homeowners did not know the suspect.

Both the deputy and officer were placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by Michigan State Police, which is standard procedure.
