Sixteen outstanding photos were selected as finalists in The Detroit News’ Celebrate Michigan Photo Contest under the first theme of the summer, City and Country, which drew 1,556 entries.

From that pool, two photos emerged as the winners:

“Big Red Blizzard,” by Chase Gagnon of Madison Heights, was chosen as the top shot by the Detroit News photo editors, who admired the icy waters and dangerous mood of the nighttime photo of Holland’s “Big Red” lighthouse during a snowstorm.

“Solar Power,” Izzy Cagalawan of Macomb, took the People’s Choice Award, chosen by an online public vote.  It features a sunburst shining over the Renaissance Center, as seen through a bench on Belle Isle.

Both winners earn $300 Visa gift cards – and the admiration of their fellow photographers.  Seven more photos will earn prizes as the contest continues this summer.
