Waterford — Hundreds of children enjoyed a day at the Waterford Oaks Waterpark on Tuesday during the Oakland County Sheriff Office’s annual Soak ’N Summer event.

The event welcomed hundreds of children from various youth groups for a chance to have fun while meeting law enforcement officials.

For the eighth year, the event brought together more than 200 members of the Boys and Girls Clubs as well as youth from the New Birth International Church in Pontiac and the Sky’s the Limit organization.

The sheriff’s office partners with the Oakland County Parks Department to treat the children to a fun day of play at the water park. Other sponsors include Oakland County Credit Union, Little Caesars Pizza and Meijer.

It’s part of Sheriff Mike Bouchard’s community outreach initiatives, said spokeswoman Mandy Andrews.

“We want kids from all over the county to have positive interactions with law enforcement,” said Andrews. “It’s a joyous occasion. The kids come and they are able to interact with our deputies.”

The event is held in August as “kind of a last hurrah before school starts up,” she said. It has expanded over the years to include more children.

“We’re trying to outreach a little more in the city of Pontiac because we patrol there now,” said Andrews. “It’s important we provide interactions like that.”
