Southfield — A motorcyclist ignoring a police request to stop was killed Sunday night from a crash on eastbound Interstate 696.

According to the Michigan State Police, a trooper attempted to stop a 2005 Kawasaki motorcycle for a traffic violation on eastbound I-696 and Lahser but the driver of the motorcycle continued on by traveling shoulder to shoulder on the freeway until it struck a 2005 Chevy Silverado near Evergreen at 7:27 p.m.

The driver of the motorcycle, identified as Bassam Issa, 27, of Sterling Heights, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported in the incident.

According to police, the driver of the motorcycle was wearing a helmet and had a motorcycle endorsement.

“It is unknown if alcohol or narcotics is a factor pending autopsy and toxicology reports,” according to police.
