A 54-year-old driver might have lost days of sleep before she ran off the road in Lake Orion last week, but luck steered her from serious harm.

The Auburn Hills woman was on South Broadway near Atwater about 4:43 p.m. Oct. 13 when her yellow Ford Focus “crossed all five lanes of traffic during rush hour, narrowly missing several vehicles,” witnesses told Lake Orion police.

The car ran off the road and into a large woodshed used as a model in the Lake Orion Lumber Co. parking lot, police said.

Then, the Ford came to rest on its side, but a witness and other motorists stopped to push the car back onto its wheels, according to police records.

Responding officers found the driver uninjured.

The reason she gave for her death-defying detour? The woman “admitted she fell asleep at the wheel and to not sleeping for over 48 hours because she was on vacation,” police said.

The driver was arrested for reckless driving and her vehicle impounded. She was released pending a court date.
