Police: SMART bus driver causes crash
West Bloomfield Township — A SMART bus driver fell asleep at the wheel Monday evening causing a chain of accidents that seriously injured two people, according to police.
The 65-year-old bus driver was heading westbound on Maple Road near Middle Belt Road around 6:09 p.m. Monday when his bus went over the center of the road and hit an eastbound vehicle. The bus then hit the rear of a westbound vehicle that then hit another eastbound vehicle. The bus hit four more vehicles before coming to a rest at a guardrail, police said.
West Bloomfield Fire Department had to extricate a passenger in one of the vehicles. That person, along with the driver of the vehicle, were taken to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
There was one passenger on the bus who was uninjured.
Neither drugs or alcohol are a factor in the crash, police said.
It is unknown if the bus driver will face any charges. Police continue to investigate.
