Madison Heights — A hauling truck struck an overpass Monday at southbound Interstate 75, causing the closure of one lane on the freeway and a closure of eastbound 12 Mile, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Crews are inspecting damage to the overpass, which crosses 12 Mile, said Diane Cross, spokeswoman with MDOT. The right lane of the southbound freeway is closed.

A trash hauler traveling on eastbound 12 Mile may have had its hydraulic lift too high, Cross said.

“It hit the bridge and big pieces of concrete had been nicked, exposing rebar,” she said.

Eastbound 12 Mile is closed, with police rerouting traffic. Westbound remains open. Motorists may consider alternative routes during afternoon rush hour.

“It will be frustrating, but this is a safety issue,” Cross said.

Last month, the driver of a waste-hauling truck died on the northbound Southfield Freeway after hitting a pedestrian overpass bridge, causing it to collapse.
