Royal Oak — A new giraffe calf at the Detroit Zoo now has a name: Mpenzi.

The zoo in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak says Thursday the name can be translated from Swahili to mean "love."

The zoo says the reticulated giraffe was born to 5-year-old Kivuli following a 15-month gestation.

The zoo says it got thousands of name suggestions and the Detroit Zoological Society invited the public to vote among five finalists while supporting giraffe conservation with a donation. Mpenzi was the entry that drew the largest amount of financial backing.

The zoo says $1,141 from the effort will be donated to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. The Detroit Zoological Society is chipping in with a $5,000 grant to the foundation.

The reticulated giraffe was born Sept. 30 to 5-year-old Kivuli following a 15-month gestation. The father of the male calf is 6-year-old Jabari.
