Independence Township — An 82-year-old Oakland County woman was killed Wednesday afternoon after the vehicle she occupied was hit head-on by another motorist.

The crash that killed Eileen Evelyn Rance of Independence Township remains under investigation by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department.

Rance was a passenger in a 2012 Ford Fusion traveling southbound on Sashabaw Road north of Stickney Road when she was struck head-on by a 2013 Dodge Avenger.

A 27-year-old Brandon Township resident was driving the Avenger northbound on Sashabaw when it veered left of center, striking the Ford, police said.

The occupants of the Ford Fusion were trapped and had to be extricated by the Independence Township Fire Department. The drivers of the Ford Fusion and the Dodge Avenger were injured and were transported to McLaren-Oakland Hospital.

Rance was pronounced dead at McLaren-Oakland Hospital at 3:14 p.m. The driver of the Ford Fusion was transferred to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital and is in guarded condition. The driver of the Dodge Avenger was treated and released.

Alcohol was not believed to have been a factor in this crash. All occupants involved were wearing seat belts.

An uninjured dog was located in Ford Fusion and was picked up by the Oakland County Animal Control.
