Pontiac — An autopsy is planned for a snowmobile rider who died in a fatal crash early Monday in the Pontiac Lake State Recreation area.

White Lake Township Police Chief Adam Kline said the mishap occurred about 1:20 a.m. Monday on a trail off Gale Road about one-quarter mile west of Williams Lake Road. The snowmobiler, identified only as a 43-year-old Waterford Township man, was dead at the scene, Klein said.

“The man was among several snowmobilers on a trail when he struck a marked bright yellow three- to four-foot-tall pole designed to keep four-wheeled vehicles off the trail,” Kline said. “Two other snowmobilers had gone around the pole but apparently he didn’t see it.”

Klein said the trail is lawfully used by snowmobilers at all hours. Police said it was snowing at the time and while the death remains under investigation, weather could have played a factor in the crash.

The man’s name wasn’t immediately released. The crash is under investigation.
