Pontiac — A seven-month-old boy is in critical condition with severe head injuries in what is suspected to be a case of child abuse.

Deputies from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department were called to a home in the 60 block of Leonard Lane at about 9:20 p.m. Thursday after receiving reports of an injured child.

The child’s father told deputies he had accidentally bumped the baby boy’s head on a railing in the home. The child was first sent to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac and was then transferred to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital for treatment.

The father and mother of the child were taken to a sheriff’s department substation for questioning. The mother was released but the father was arrested on an unrelated warrant.

He remains in custody at the Oakland County Jail.
