Clinton Twp. 5th-grader's penguin art wins zoo contest

Royal Oak — A fifth-grade student has won a penguin art contest that was part of an effort to welcome some of the Detroit Zoo's new residents.

An Ottawa Elementary School student took top prize.

Organizers announced Monday the girl is a student at Ottawa Elementary School in Clinton Township.

Comerica Bank and the zoo launched the contest in February. Children had their parents upload artwork for a chance to win a $1,000 grant for their school.

The winner and her class also will go on a trip to the zoo in Royal Oak to see new gentoo penguins and participate in a penguin keeper presentation.

The contest coincided with Comerica Bank's $50,000 contribution for the zoo's new $29.5 million Polk Penguin Conservation Center, which is scheduled to open in early 2016.
