Rochester — Oakland University inaugurated George W. Hynd as the school’s sixth president Wednesday.

Hynd, who was chosen president in July 2014, officially took office in a ceremony attended by university administrators, faculty and students in the school’s O’rena.

Hynd succeeded Betty Youngblood, who was appointed interim president by the OU Board of Trustees after Gary Russi retired suddenly in June 2013.

Hynd had been provost and executive vice president of the College of Charleston from 2010 to 2014.

Oakland University has 20,519 students, and its enrollment has risen more than 40 percent since the late 1990s.
