Pontiac boy, 3, accidentally shot by gun in home
Pontiac — A 3-year-old Pontiac boy is recovering after being accidentally shot by his father’s stolen handgun.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department, the incident occurred around 7:10 p.m. Thursday in the 1100 block of Featherstone. Arriving deputies were told by the victim’s mother that she and four of her children were sitting on a bed when the boy’s legs became stuck between the mattress and the wall.
The woman said the boy began moving around and reaching for his legs when she heard a boom. She picked up the boy and discovered he had been shot in the leg. Deputies discovered a handgun that had been placed under the mattress by the child’s father.
The boy was rushed to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital where he was operated on for a through-and-through wound to his upper right thigh. The bullet also grazed his left wrist.
Deputies determined the gun had been reported stolen out of Roseville. The 27-year-old father was taken into custody on a weapons violation and charges are pending.
The child is expected to make a full recovery.
