Pontiac — A 61-year-old man died early Friday when his car veered off the roadway and hit a pole, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

The Waterford Township resident crashed his 1997 Ford Taurus around 7:55 a.m. on the 200 block of North Telegraph Road, officials said. Alcohol may have been a factor in the incident.

The motorist was traveling southbound on Telegraph when he drifted over the southbound and northbound lanes, officials said. His vehicle left the roadway onto private property and struck a pole.

The driver, who was wearing his seatbelt, initially was trapped inside the vehicle and was extricated by the Waterford Regional Fire Department, officials said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office is withholding the man’s identity until next of kin are notified. The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s Crash Reconstruction Unit.
