Lyon Township — Police are saying that alcohol and cellphone use may have contributed to a crash that took the life of an 89-year-old woman Monday afternoon.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department, the crash occurred at about 4:20 p.m. at Milford and 11 Mile.

Police said a 50-year-old South Lyon woman stopped at the stop sign on Milford. Then, while reportedly talking on her cellphone, pulled in front of a southbound FedEx semi-truck that T-boned her vehicle on the passenger side door.

Lyon Township resident Betty E. Whitfield died at the scene. The driver of the truck, a 57-year-old resident of Redford Township, was uninjured in the crash.

The driver of the Taurus was taken to Botsford Hospital for treatment of her injuries and was later transferred to the Oakland County Jail where she remains.

Police said it appears alcohol was also a factor in the crash.
