Royal Oak — A 50-year-old woman was shot to death and police say they have a man in custody in the case.

The body of Theresa Diamos was found at her house on the 800 block of Altadena after police received a 911 call from a neighbor at 2:52 a.m. Monday.

According to a release from Royal Oak police, “the victim’s live-in boyfriend, a convicted felon, has been arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and is a suspect in the homicide.

“The suspect initially told neighbors and responding officers that there was an intruder, however, investigators found no evidence to support the suspect’s initial claim. The suspect has not cooperated with the investigation.”

Police said the suspect’s name won’t be released until there is an arraignment.

Sarmad Awdish was among several neighbors who alerted police to the situation.

“My friend said: ‘That was a gunshot, call 911,’ so we called 911,” he said. “They already had like five phone calls already coming in.”

Awdish, 30, said as soon as they finished contacting authorities, they could see a police presence, including SWAT, at the home.

“Just heard them saying: ‘Everybody get out of the house, if there’s anyone in the house, please come out,’ ” he said.

Awdish, who is new to the neighborhood, said while he’s never met the woman who was shot, the incident has him “freaking out.”

Royal Oak police are asking for information and possible witnesses to contact Sgt. Don Swiatkowski at (248) 246-3528.
