Farmington Hills police said a woman made up a story about an attack she reported earlier this month.

The woman initially said she was out walking around 1 a.m. Nov. 8 in the area of Shiawassee Street and Hamilton when she was attacked by a man. Police released a sketch of the man based on the woman’s description.

“Through the course of the investigation, detectives found several inconsistencies in the description of the incident as told by the reporting victim,” police said in a statement Tuesday.

Detectives interviewed the woman several times. She eventually admitted she made up the story to explain an injury in a fall.

“She apologized to the detectives, explaining that she initially told the fabricated story to her mother and that ‘it got out of hand,’” police said.

Police do not plan to pursue criminal charges against the woman and instead referred her for counseling.

The Farmington Hills Police Department provided the update “to alleviate concern and fear generated by the reporting of this incident,” police said.
