Boxer Hearns, Southfield get seniors clothed for winter

Southfield — Former boxing champion Thomas “Hitman” Hearns excited crowds for years with his quick knockouts of opponents.

Monday, a softer side of the five-time title winner was on display at the Southfield Parks & Recreation Department as Hearns helped pass out 500 new winter hats, gloves and pairs of socks to needy residents 60 and older.

“All across America, there are countless seniors struggling to meet their basic needs,” Hearns said. “Having a warm pair of gloves, socks, and hat will give them one less necessity to worry about this winter.”

Besides Hearns, the owner of Bully’s Tree Service in Southfield, Carl Smith, partnered in the winter gear giveaway.

“Every senior should have the opportunity to have a warm hat, gloves, and socks not only for Christmas but throughout the year,” Smith said.
