Oak Park — An Oak Park neighborhood is reeling after a mother accidentally killed her 1-year-old daughter when she backed over the child with her vehicle.

According to Oak Park Manager Erik Tungate, the incident occurred Thursday morning on Marlowe Street, in an area south of Nine Mile and east of Greenfield Road.

“It is such a terrible accident,” Tungate said. “The mother is just inconsolable.”

According to Tungate, the unidentified woman had four children with her, including the 1-year-old.

“We’re still investigating on how the child ended up behind the car,” Tungate said. “We had an officer at the scene within three minutes of the situation. My officer took the 1-year-old to the hospital where an emergency response team was waiting, but they were unable to resuscitate the child.”

Neighbors called the incident “terrible” Thursday afternoon.

The mother is in her early 20’s and has two children, including the 1-year-old, said neighbors who did not want to be named. They described her as a hard working girl who is enrolled in school.

“She’s a friendly, sweet young lady,” one neighbor said adding that the woman always had her children with her.

Tungate was uncertain whether the child was taken to Beaumont or Providence hospital.

“The investigation is continuing, and obviously, this is an open process until we determine all the factors, but at this point, we believe it was an accident,” Tungate said.
