Lansing — Gov. Rick Snyder has appointed an Oakland County official as the state’s fire marshal.

Julie Secontine, who has served as the county’s risk manager, also was named director of the Michigan Bureau of Fire Services by the director of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. That bureau serves about 31,000 firefighters in Michigan.

The Rochester Hills woman will oversee fire safety code adoption and enforcement, firefighter training, the Michigan Fireworks Safety Act, fire incident data reporting and analysis, regulation of aboveground and underground storage tanks, hazardous materials incident responses and public education.

Secontine replaces Mike Deprez, the state’s acting fire marshal.

Secontine has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Michigan State University and a law degree from Wayne State University.
