A 74-year-old Highland Township woman was injured Friday while attempting to take a sharp weapon away from her 79-year-old husband as he attempted suicide, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies responded to the 3800 block of Burwood Lane at 3:48 p.m. Friday for a domestic violence and attempted suicide situation.

The wife of the suspect “stated that her husband has dementia and had been stabbing himself in the chest with a knife,” the sheriff’s department said in a statement Tuesday. “She attempted to take the knife away from him when her hand was cut.”

The woman went to a neighbor’s house and called 911.

Deputies went to the couple’s home and confronted the man, who refused to drop his weapon, which turned out to be one half of a pair of stainless steel scissors. As the man advanced toward them, a deputy deployed a Taser with no effect, officials said. After a second use of the Taser, the man was taken into custody.

The man was taken to the hospital for a committal and treatment of his injuries. Detectives continue to investigate.
