Southfield — Two affordable housing developments are getting a $19.8 million overhaul.

McDonnell Tower Apartments and the tower and townhomes at River Park Place are being upgraded as part of the effort.

The Southfield Nonprofit Housing Corporation and Larc Community Development Group of Southfield worked to secure Michigan State Housing Development Authority tax credit financing and a construction loan to renovate the developments.

In addition to exterior and interior renovations, upgrades to improve energy efficiency are expected to lower residents’ monthly utility costs.

McDonnell Tower Apartments on 24400 Civic Center Drive is an 11-story building that includes 162 units for those ages 62 and older. The River Park Place Apartment complex at 24300 Civic Center offers 245 rental housing units, including 182 units for those 62 and older and eight family townhomes.
