Part of Big Beaver Road closed starting Thursday
A section of Big Beaver Road west of Somerset Collection will be closed starting Thursday for utility relocation work to be done by Consumers Energy, according to the Road Commission for Oakland County.
The utility work along the road, between Woodward and Adams in Birmingham and Bloomfield Township, is expected to last until about May 31. It’s being done to prepare for a reconstruction of Big Beaver, which also will require the road to be closed.
According to the road commission, access to homes and businesses on Big Beaver in the construction zone will be maintained during the closure. The detour for through traffic will be Woodward to Long Lake Road to Adams and back to Big Beaver and vice versa.
“We are very sensitive to the closing of this heavily used roadway and the inconvenience it may cause to many motorists,” said Greg Jamian, a road commission board member. “But this work was necessitated by the deteriorated condition of the existing road and the bridge over the Rouge River.”
Also during the project, Ivy Street just north of Big Beaver between Kensington and Adams will be closed to through traffic.
