Royal Oak police have made an arrest in Sunday’s early morning shooting at Hookah Joe that injured an employee of the downtown business, the city announced. The investigation is ongoing.

The arrest was made with assistance from Troy police, the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force, and the Oakland County Narcotics Enforcement Team, police chief Corrigan O’Donohue said in a statement. The shooting, police say, was “preceded by a verbal altercation within the lounge” between two male suspects and another patron at about 3:30 a.m.

One brandished a gun, and the other “motioned as if he had a handgun in his waistband,” a statement from police said.

“Suspects fired one round at an individual outside the lounge on Washington Street. The suspects then pulled their vehicle in front of Hookah Joe and fired three to four more rounds into the lounge,” the statement continued.

An employee was hit by one of the rounds and suffered a minor head injury. The suspects fled in a silver vehicle, possibly a Dodge Charger, with chrome rims, tinted windows and a dent in the passenger side door.

Police have not said which of the two suspects were arrested. One was described in initial reports as a dark-skinned black male, thin build, between 6 feet and 6-3, and the other as a light-skinned black male, medium build, with long hair pulled into a pony tail.
