A 78-year-old Rochester Hills man died Monday after his apartment was engulfed in smoke from a kitchen fire, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire was discovered around 6:40 p.m. on the 2500 block of Walton Boulevard after another resident told a night watchman that she smelled smoke in the building, officials said. The watchman found the source and opened the door to the unit, causing smoke to billow into the hallway.

He attempted to extinguish the fire and called 9-1-1.

The Rochester Hills Fire Department arrived and extinguished flames that were contained to a countertop and cabinet area of the kitchen, officials said. After putting out the fire, emergency personnel discovered the victim and attempted life-saving measures before transporting him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead by an emergency room physician.

The fire department requested assistance from the sheriff’s office to investigate the fire. Both the cause of the blaze and victim’s death remain undetermined.
