Southfield man fatally shot in domestic dispute

A 34-year-old man was fatally shot late Tuesday during a domestic dispute inside the Southfield home he shared with the suspect, according to police.

Police received a 911 call around 11:40 p.m. from a woman reporting shots fired on the 28300 block of Lockdale, at Tel-Twelve Place Apartments, Southfield Deputy Chief Nick Loussia said in a statement.

“Upon initial investigation it appears that there was a domestic dispute between a 24-year-old female and a 34-year-old male,” he said. “The dispute escalated, causing the female to retrieve a handgun and fatally shoot the male.”

Police are looking into whether the shooting was in self-defense, Loussia said. The suspect was “being detained” early Wednesday as the investigation remained ongoing.

“When we complete our investigation, we’ll forward our findings to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, who will make a decision on whether charges will be filed,” he said.

No further information was provided about the suspect or victim.
