A 28-year-old man died Sunday afternoon during a fishing accident in Holly Township, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

The Grand Blanc resident apparently suffered a seizure around 12:30 p.m. while standing in a pond off the 1400 block of Joann, according to a witness statement. He disappeared below the water surface, prompting his friend to dial 911.

First responders to the scene included the North Oakland County Fire Authority, Michigan State Police, Holly Police, Department of Natural Resources and the sheriff’s office dive team.

About one hour later, the man was recovered from an area of 10 feet of water, about 30 feet from his last known location, officials said. He was rushed to Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc Township, where he was pronounced deceased.

It remained unclear early Monday what caused the man’s episode or how he ended up in deeper water. State police are investigating.
