Novi – Twelve Oaks Mall was evacuated late Saturday afternoon after reports of an active shooter in the shopping center, but Novi police said a smash-and-grab robbery had occurred and that there was no gunfire.

“On scene commanders reporting there NO ACTIVE SHOOTER at Twelve Oaks,” Novi Police Chief David Molloy said on Twitter shortly after 6 p.m. “Officers are investigating a smash and grab robbery.”

In later Tweets, Molloy said the mall was on lockdown, and added details about the incident. “We’re investigating a smash & grab robbery at Tapper’s Jewelry. Mall is on lockdown.”

Witnesses told WDIV-TV (Ch. 4) that shoppers were evacuated from the mall into the parking lot, and that the sound of breaking glass might have been mistaken for gunfire.
