A 31-year-old man was charged this week with assaulting his girlfriend while intoxicated, Bloomfield Township police said.

Officers were dispatched to the 2600 block of Colonial Way at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday on a report of a domestic assault.

Investigators learned a Clarkston resident, Andy Fugate, “was intoxicated and attempted to take his girlfriend’s car,” police said in a statement. “When she refused to give him the keys, he forcefully took them from her and physically assaulted her several times. He then went to her car, punched and jumped on the windshield until it was completely shattered.”

Fugate left the scene in his girlfriend’s car, but officers soon caught up to him on nearby Woodward.

The man “was traveling at 30 mph and was unable to stay in its lane,” authorities said.

Fugate was arrested for operating while intoxicated, driving on a suspended license, domestic assault and malicious destruction of property.

He was arraigned Monday before Judge Diane D’Agostini at 48th District Court in Bloomfield Hills. Bond was set at $10,000. His next court date is scheduled for Sept. 21.
