Southfield police are investigating a shooting that took place Friday night in an apartment building.

Police responded to a 911 call at 7:06 p.m. Friday about a shooting at the Regal Towers Apartments on the 27000 block of Franklin Road. Upon arrival, they found one victim, a 34-year-old Wayne man who’d been shot in the stomach, according to a news release from the department.

Fire department officials transported the man to an area hospital, though his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police say the man who fired the shot is a 60-year-old Southfield resident. Police say he has a valid concealed pistol license, and that he not only placed the initial 911 call, he stayed on the scene to talk to officers, then came back in for another interview. He says he acted in self-defense and that the shooting victim approached him in the parking lot in an aggressive manner, according to police.

At no point was he arrested, and as of Monday he is still free, said Lt. Ted Goff of the Southfield Police Department. The shooter and the victim do not know each other, Goff said.

Police are asking that anyone who knows more about the shooting to call 248-796-5500. The department has not yet made its recommendation on charges to the Oakland County Prosecutor.
