Pontiac — Two workers were seriously injured Friday afternoon when they fell inside a 30-foot water tower under maintenance.

The condition of the pair was not known as of 4 p.m. but paramedics were with them and preparing them to be taken to hospitals, Waterford Township Fire Lt. John Phebus said.

“It’s not clear if it was an equipment failure or something gave way but they fell inside the tower which had been drained for repairs,” Phebus said. “There are several platforms inside there and they could have fallen anywhere from 15 to 30 feet.”

The accident inside the tower at 312 E. Montcalm occurred shortly after 3 p.m. and was reported by other workers who were not injured, Phebus said. The extent of the two workers’ injuries were still to be determined, Phebus said, but at least one worker had shown slight improvement after being given first aid by paramedics.

The tower is operated by the Oakland County Water Resource Commission, he said. It was not immediately know if the workers were from a private company or county employees.

Multiple public safety units were helping in the accident, Phebus said.
