Waterford Township — The Rolladium Family Fun Center, a recreational destination for Oakland County families for more than 60 years, has reopened this month and with more than just roller skating.

There are still flashing lights and booming music played by a DJ to keep skaters moving around the Highland Road rink. But the first thing those returning to the center will notice is that the building has been brightened with fresh paint and new carpeting.

It’s also been enlarged with a 5,000-square-foot expansion to make room for an enlarged snack bar and other activities. Gone is a dropped ceiling which could make the building uncomfortably warm at times.

The traditional roller rink will be the primary draw, as it has been since earlier generations of the Anselmi family built it in the late 1940s. But the current general manager, Tony Anselmi, notes his great-great-grandfather probably wouldn’t recognize the place.

“We’ve decided to keep what the public enjoys but also wanted to offer some different things — more than just skating,” said Anselmi, proudly waving an arm at an enlarged section of 25 token-operated games beneath a two-story bright blue, yellow and red structure and ropes course, which includes a Sky Rail zipline segment.

Providing you are 48 inches or taller, you are first harnessed into a body-hugging safety belt and vest and then permitted to enter the ropes course, a series of rope stairs, bridges, steps and swings. Admission is $7 for 15 minutes.

“Go-karts and laser tag are both available in the area, but this is something new,” Anselmi said. “And the kids — both young and old — love it.”

The Rolladium, closed for four months for the renovations, is opening its doors for public and private skating events, he said. Admission for skating and skate rental fees vary from $5 to $12, depending on the night of the week.

Some nights are designated as school skate promotions for 22 elementary and middle schools in the area, family nights and teen nights.
