A Highland Township man was able to walk away safely after fast-thinking — and fast-acting — neighbors rescued him after he and his snowmobile fell into a lake Sunday night in northern Oakland County.

The 52-year-old had taken his snowmobile out onto Highland Lake, when the vehicle fell through the ice and into the water about 6:30 p.m., according to a statement from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

Neighbors called 911 but also worked to pull the man out of the water, which they succeeded in doing before the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office’s dive team arrived.

Star EMS took the man to Huron Valley Hospital. He’s since been treated and released.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources “was notified regarding the removal of the snowmobile from the lake,” the statement said.
