Pontiac — Two people died in a fire at an apartment building in Pontiac.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said residents of the Woodland Heights complex, in the 100 block of N. Edith, were evacuated early Saturday morning.

Dispatch initially received a 911 call from a man who said there was heavy smoke in his apartment followed by several other calls to 911 from residents reporting people trapped inside the building, according the sheriff’s office.

The fire was on the second floor east wing of the building. Four people were taken to McLaren Hospital-Oakland. One person was pronounced dead at the hospital and the three other victims were treated and released.

A fifth victim was found dead in the bedroom of the apartment.

The dead have been initially identified as a 79 year-old man and a 53 year-old man.

Waterford Fire Department Deputy Chief Matt Covey tells WXYZ-TV that “nobody wants to start off the holiday with a loss of life” and that several residents of the building “won’t have a place to stay.”
