Officials probe death of 20-month-old Pontiac girl
Oakland County Sheriff’s officials are probing the death of a 20-month-old girl at a Pontiac home this week.
Deputies were called to the McLaren Oakland hospital emergency room about 9:50 a.m. Wednesday on a report that the child had been hurt in a fall, investigators said.
The child’s mother told them her 24-year-old boyfriend had been caring for the child at the time. He had called his girlfriend to report that “the child had injured herself by falling down the stairs,” authorities said in a statement.
The mother returned to their home in the 200 block of West Howard and found the child at the bottom of the stairs and her boyfriend performing CPR, according to the release. She then rushed the child to the hospital.
Deputies responded to the residence and met with the boyfriend. He was taken to the sheriff’s office substation, where detectives interviewed him about the incident.
Meanwhile, the girl was transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, where a doctor pronounced her dead.
An autopsy was performed Thursday, but the cause of death is pending, the sheriff’s office said.
Detectives are continuing to investigate. Other details were not released.
