Pontiac -- A 23-year-old Pontiac man died early Saturday morning of injuries suffered in a garage explosion and house fire.

Waterford Township Deputy Fire Chief Matthew Covey said the fire department responded to a reported house explosion and injury in the 200 block of State Street about 8:40 p.m. Friday.

Fire crews found a multi-story home heavily involved in fire, Covey said and a severely injured person lying in the grass near the driveway, suffering severe wounds but still breathing.

The injured man was rushed to McLaren Oakland Hospital by Star EMS where he was initially listed in critical condition. He expired in the hospital about 4:30 a.m., according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating the incident along with the fire department.

Investigators have interviewed the victim's girlfriend and his brother who said the man had come home Friday with sections of pipe and was building something in the garage.
