Oakland County Sheriff’s officials have arrested a man who they say brutally assaulted a man in Pontiac this week.

The alleged attacker, a 58-year-old Pontiac man, was identified by a witness in a photo lineup in connection with the Thursday assault in the 500 block of South Paddock. He was arrested around 3 p.m. Friday, police said.

Authorities say deputies were dispatched to the scene of the attack around 5:50 p.m. Thursday and found the 53-year-old victim, also of Pontiac, standing in the street with severe lacerations to his head.

At the time, a separate witness told police he saw a man assault the victim “with an edged weapon until another subject pulled the suspect off of the victim,” the release read.

The suspect and his companion then left in a vehicle deputies found nearby, but by that time he had fled, authorities reported.

Meanwhile, the victim was rushed to St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital with deep cuts to his back, head, jaw and face. After undergoing surgery and receiving at least 100 staples, he was intubated and unable to speak with detectives, sheriff’s officials said.

The suspect, who police say is also a registered sex offender, was held at the Oakland County Jail pending charges.
