A 49-year-old Southfield man, president of the Phantom Motorcycle Club, shot himself in the hand while trying to pat down a visitor to the Pontiac club early Sunday morning, police said.

The incident took place at about 4:13 a.m. in the 40 block of South Glenwood. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office, the law enforcement agency for Pontiac, caught up with the victim at McLaren Hospital.

There he told deputies that he conducted a pat down search of a visitor to the club, to ensure no weapons were brought inside. But the person being patted down did have a gun, which was holstered. The victim said the gun went off and struck him in his left hand.

Deputies backtracked to the club, and found the shooting scene. Witnesses told a story matching what they'd heard from the victim. No one was arrested. The investigation is ongoing.
